On a huawei smartphone, the following information may suddenly appear on your screen: "new tag captured - empty tag".


If this message appears to you for the first time, you probably want to know what is going on with this message and how to avoid it.


Reason for the message "new tag captured"


This message is caused by the connection method NFC and a tag that has been detected. NFC stands for near field communication and includes a transmission method over very short distances. Which tag is captured by NFC?


Often such a tag is hidden in the credit card (mastercard, VISA etc.), which users of the huawei smartphone put into a case (protective case, leather case etc.) of the smartphone.

Skin tags


Skin tags are small growths that hang off your skin. They're common and harmless, but can be removed if they're bothering you.


What skin tags look like


Skin tags are small, soft, skin-coloured growths on your skin. They can vary in colour and size – from a few millimetres up to 5cm wide.


Skin tags are usually found on the neck, armpits, around the groin, or under the breasts. They can also grow on the eyelids or under the folds of the buttocks.


They can look like warts, but skin tags are usually:



  • Smooth and soft (warts tend to be rougher with an irregular surface)

  • Knobbly and hang off the skin (warts are usually slightly raised or flat)

  • Not contagious (warts spread very easily, so a sudden outbreak or cluster of growths is more likely to be warts)



Skin tags do not usually cause any pain or discomfort.


Why skin tags occur


Skin tags are made of loose collagen fibres and blood vessels surrounded by skin. Collagen is a type of protein found throughout the body.


Both men and women can develop skin tags. They tend to occur in older people and people who are obese or have type 2 diabetes.


Pregnant women may also be more likely to develop skin tags as a result of changes in their hormone levels. Some people develop them for no apparent reason.


Skin tags tend to grow in the skin folds, where the skin rubs against itself, such as on the neck, armpits or groin. This is why they tend to affect overweight people who have excess folds of skin and skin chafing.


When skin tags can be a problem


Skin tags are harmless and do not usually cause pain or discomfort.


However, you may consider having skin tags removed if they're affecting your self esteem, or if they snag on clothing or jewellery and bleed. You'll usually need to pay to have this done privately.


This is because skin tag removal is regarded as cosmetic surgery, which is rarely available through the NHS. Cosmetic surgery is usually only available on the NHS if the problem is affecting your physical or mental health.


Sometimes, skin tags fall off on their own if the tissue has twisted and died from a lack of blood supply.


Removing skin tags


Do not try to remove a skin tag without speaking to a GP first. If you have a skin tag that's causing problems, consider making an appointment with a privately practising GP to have it removed.


Skin tags can easily be burnt or frozen off in a similar way to how warts are removed. They can also be surgically removed, sometimes using local anaesthetic.


Freezing or burning skin tags can cause irritation and temporary skin discoloration, and the skin tag may not fall off and further treatment may be needed.


Surgical removal has the advantage of removing the skin tag completely, but there is a risk of minor bleeding.


If your skin tag is small with a narrow base, your GP may suggest that you try to remove it yourself.


For example, they may suggest tying off the base of the skin tag with dental floss or cotton to cut off its blood supply and make it drop off (ligation).


Never attempt to remove large skin tags yourself because they'll bleed heavily.

How are skin tags removed? Plus causes, diagnosis, and more


Understanding the basics


Skin tags are painless, noncancerous growths on the skin. They’re connected to the skin by a small, thin stalk called a peduncle. Skin tags are common in both men and women, especially after age 50. They can appear anywhere on your body, though they’re commonly found in places where your skin folds such as the:



  • Armpits

  • Groin

  • Thighs

  • Eyelids

  • Neck

  • Area under your breasts



Tiny skin tags may rub off on their own. Most skin tags stay attached to your skin. In general, skin tags don’t require treatment. If skin tags hurt or bother you, you may opt to have them removed.


Your doctor may remove your skin tags by:



  • Cryotherapy: freezing the skin tag with liquid nitrogen.

  • Surgical removal: removing the skin tag with scissors or a scalpel.

  • Electrosurgery: burning off the skin tag with high-frequency electrical energy.

  • Ligation: removing the skin tag by tying it off with surgical thread in order to cut off its blood flow.



Having small skin tags removed doesn’t usually require anesthesia. Your doctor may use local anesthesia when removing large or multiple skin tags.


You can also try natural remedies to remove skin tags. These include tea tree oil, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice. Keep in mind that there’s no scientific evidence to support these remedies.


It’s not a good idea to try to remove skin tags on your own. Many websites offer DIY instructions for removing skin tags by tying them off with string or applying a chemical peel. Even in a sterile environment, removing skin tags may cause bleeding, burns, and infection. It’s best to let your doctor handle the job.


The main way to identify a skin tag is by the peduncle. Unlike moles and some other skin growths, skin tags hang off the skin by this small stalk.


Most skin tags are tiny, typically smaller than 2 millimeters in size. Some can grow as large as several centimeters. Skin tags are soft to the touch. They may be smooth and round, or they may be wrinkly and asymmetrical. Some skin tags are threadlike and resemble grains of rice.


Skin tags may be flesh-colored. They can also be darker than the surrounding skin due to hyperpigmentation. If a skin tag becomes twisted, it may turn black due to a lack of blood flow.


It’s unclear exactly what causes skin tags. Since they usually show up in skin folds, friction may play a role. Skin tags are made up of blood vessels and collagen surrounded by an outer layer of skin.


According to a 2008 study, the human papillomavirus (HPV) may be a factor in the development of skin tags. The study analyzed 37 skin tags from various sites of the body. Results showed HPV DNA in almost 50 percent of the skin tags examined.


Insulin resistance, which may lead to type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, may also play a role in the development of skin tags. People with insulin resistance don’t absorb glucose effectively from the bloodstream. According to a 2010 study, the presence of multiple skin tags was associated with insulin resistance, a high body mass index, and high triglycerides.


Skin tags are also a common side effect of pregnancy. This may be due to pregnancy hormones and weight gain. In rare cases, multiple skin tags can be a sign of a hormone imbalance or an endocrine problem.


Skin tags aren’t contagious. There may be a genetic connection. It isn’t unusual for multiple family members to have them.


You may be at greater risk of getting skin tags if you:



  • Are overweight

  • Are pregnant

  • Have family members who have skin tags

  • Have insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes

  • Have HPV



Skin tags don’t become skin cancer. Irritation may occur if they rub with clothing, jewelry, or other skin.


Shave with caution around skin tags. Shaving off a skin tag won’t cause permanent damage, though it may cause pain and prolonged bleeding.



Retention tags and retention policies in exchange server


Messaging records management (MRM) helps organizations to manage email lifecycle and reduce legal risks associated with email and other communications. MRM makes it easier to keep messages needed to comply with company policy, government regulations, or legal needs, and to remove content that has no legal or business value.


Messaging records management strategy


MRM in exchange server is accomplished by using retention tags and retention policies. Before discussing the details about each of these retention features, let's learn how the features are used in the overall MRM strategy:


Assigning retention policy tags (rpts) to default folders, such as the inbox and deleted items.


Applying default policy tags (dpts) to mailboxes to manage the retention of all untagged items.


Allowing the user to assign personal tags to custom folders and individual items.


Separating MRM functionality from users' inbox management and filing habits. Users aren't required to file messages in managed folders based on retention requirements. Individual messages can have a different retention tag than the one applied to the folder in which they're located.


The following figure illustrates the tasks involved in implementing this strategy.


Retention tags


As you can see, retention tags are used to apply retention settings to folders and individual items such as email messages and voice mail. These settings specify how long a message remains in a mailbox and the action to take when the message reaches the specified retention age. When a message reaches its retention age, it's moved to the user's in-place archive or deleted.


Retention tags allow users to tag their own mailbox folders and individual items for retention. Users no longer have to file items in managed folders provisioned by an administrator based on message retention requirements.


Types of retention tags


Retention tags are classified into the following three types based on who can apply them and where in a mailbox they can be applied.

users can automate tagging by using inbox rules to either move a message to a folder that has a particular tag or to apply a personal tag to the message.

personal tags allow your users to determine how long an item should be retained. For example, the mailbox can have a DPT to delete items in seven years, but a user can create an exception for items such as newsletters and automated notifications by applying a personal tag to delete them in three days.


More about personal tags


Personal tags are available to outlook and outlook on the web users as part of their retention policy. In outlook and outlook on the web, personal tags with the move to archive action appear as archive policy, and personal tags with the delete and allow recovery or permanently delete actions appear as retention policy, as shown here:


Users can apply personal tags to folders they create or to individual items. Messages that have a personal tag applied are always processed based on the personal tag's settings. Users can apply a personal tag to a message so that it's moved or deleted sooner or later than the settings specified in the DPT or rpts applied to that user's mailbox. You can also create personal tags with retention disabled. This allows users to tag items so they're never moved to an archive or never expire.


Users can apply archive policies to default folders, user-created folders or subfolders, and individual items. Users can apply a retention policy to user-created folders or subfolders and individual items (including subfolders and items in a default folder), but not to default folders.


Users can also use the exchange admin center (EAC) to select additional personal tags that aren't linked to their retention policy. The selected tags then become available in outlook and outlook on the web. To enable users to select additional tags from the EAC, you must add the myretentionpolicies role to the user's role assignment policy. If you allow users to select additional personal tags, all personal tags in your exchange organization become available to them.


Personal tags are a premium feature. Mailboxes with policies that contain these tags (or as a result of users adding the tags to their mailbox) require an exchange enterprise client access license (CAL).


Retention age


When you enable a retention tag, you must specify a retention age for the tag. This age indicates the number of days to retain a message after it arrives in the user's mailbox.


The retention age for non-recurring items (such as email messages) is calculated differently than items that have an end date or recurring items (such as meetings and tasks). To learn how retention age is calculated for different types of items, see how retention age is calculated in exchange server.


You can also create retention tags with retention disabled or disable tags after they're created. Because messages that have a disabled tag applied aren't processed, no retention action is taken. As a result, users can use a disabled personal tag as a never move tag or a never delete tag to override a DPT or RPT that would otherwise apply to the message.


Retention actions


When creating or configuring a retention tag, you can select one of the following retention actions to be taken when an item reaches its retention age:


Retention action action taken. Except.
Move to archive moves the message to the user's archive mailbox
only available for dpts and personal tags

If the user doesn't have an archive mailbox, no action is taken.
Delete and allow recovery: emulates the behavior when the user empties the deleted items folder.
Items are moved to the recoverable items folder in exchange server in the mailbox and preserved until the deleted item retention period.
Provides the user a second chance to recover the item using the recover deleted items dialog box in outlook or outlook on the web
if you've set the deleted item retention period to zero days, items are permanently deleted. For details, see configure deleted item retention and recoverable items quotas.
Permanently delete permanently deletes messages.
You can't recover messages after they're permanently deleted.
If mailbox is placed on in-place hold and litigation hold in exchange server or litigation hold, items are preserved in the recoverable items folder based on hold parameters. In-place ediscovery in exchange server will still return these items in search results.
Mark as past retention limit marks a message as expired. In outlook, and outlook on the web, expired items are displayed with the notification stating 'this item has expired' and 'this item will expire in 0 days'. N. A.


Default policy tag (DPT) with move to archive action always overwrites the retention policy tag (RPT) or the personal tag (PT), when the age limit for retention of DPT is lower than RPT or PT.

Retention policies


To apply one or more retention tags to a mailbox, you need to add them to a retention policy and then apply the policy to mailboxes. A mailbox can't have more than one retention policy. Retention tags can be linked to or unlinked from a retention policy at any time, and the changes automatically take effect for all mailboxes that have the policy applied.


A retention policy can have the following retention tags:


Retention tag type tags in a policy
default policy tag (DPT) one DPT with the move to archive action
one DPT with the delete and allow recovery or permanently delete actions
one DPT for voice mail messages with the delete and allow recovery or permanently delete action
retention policy tags (rpts) one RPT for each supported default folder
note: you can't link more than one RPT for a particular default folder (such as deleted items) to the same retention policy.
Personal tags any number of personal tags
note: many personal tags in a policy can confuse users. We recommend adding no more than 10 personal tags to a retention policy.


Although a retention policy doesn't need to have any retention tags linked to it, we don't recommend using this scenario. If mailboxes with retention policies don't have retention tags linked to them, this may cause mailbox items to never expire.


A retention policy can contain both archive tags (tags that move items to the personal archive mailbox) and deletion tags (tags that delete items). A mailbox item can also have both types of tags applied. Archive mailboxes don't have a separate retention policy. The same retention policy is applied to the primary and archive mailbox.


When planning to create retention policies, you must consider whether they'll include both archive and deletion tags. As mentioned earlier, a retention policy can have one DPT that uses the move to archive action and one DPT that uses either the delete and allow recovery or permanently delete action. The DPT with the move to archive action must have a lower retention age than the DPT with a deletion action. For example, you can use a DPT with the move to archive action to move items to the archive mailbox in two years, and a DPT with a deletion action to remove items from the mailbox in seven years. Items in both primary and archive mailboxes will be deleted after seven years.


Default retention policy


Exchange setup creates the retention policy default MRM policy. The policy is applied automatically if you create an archive for the new user and don't specify a retention policy


You can modify tags included in the default MRM policy, for example by changing the retention age or retention action, disable a tag or modify the policy by adding or removing tags from it. The updated policy is applied to mailboxes the next time they're processed by the managed folder assistant.

Managed folder assistant


The managed folder assistant, a mailbox assistant that runs on mailbox servers, processes mailboxes that have a retention policy applied.


The managed folder assistant applies the retention policy by inspecting items in the mailbox and determining whether they're subject to retention. It then stamps items subject to retention with the appropriate retention tags and takes the specified retention action on items past their retention age.


The managed folder assistant is a throttle-based assistant. Throttle-based assistants are always running and don't need to be scheduled. The system resources they can consume are throttled. You can configure the managed folder assistant to process all mailboxes on a mailbox server within a certain period (known as a work cycle). Additionally, at a specified interval (known as the work cycle checkpoint), the assistant refreshes the list of mailboxes to be processed. During the refresh, the assistant adds newly created or moved mailboxes to the queue. It also reprioritizes existing mailboxes that haven't been processed successfully due to failures and moves them higher in the queue so they can be processed during the same work cycle.


You can also use the start-managedfolderassistant cmdlet to manually trigger the assistant to process a specified mailbox. To learn more, see configure and run the managed folder assistant in exchange server.


The managed folder assistant doesn't take any action on messages that aren't subject to retention, specified by disabling the retention tag. You can also disable a retention tag to temporarily suspend items with that tag from being processed.


Moving items between folders


A mailbox item moved from one folder to another inherits any tags applied to the folder to which it's moved. If an item is moved to a folder that doesn't have a tag assigned, the DPT is applied to it. If the item has a tag explicitly assigned to it, the tag always takes precedence over any folder-level tags or the default tag.


Applying a retention tag to a folder in the archive


When the user applies a personal tag to a folder in the archive, if a folder with the same name exists in the primary mailbox and has a different tag, the tag on that folder in the archive changes to match the one in the primary mailbox. This is by design to avoid any confusion about items in a folder in the archive having a different expiry behavior than the same folder in the user's primary mailbox. For example, the user has a folder named project contoso in the primary mailbox with a delete - 3 years tag and a project contoso folder also exists in the archive mailbox. If the user applies a delete - 1 year personal tag to delete items in the folder after 1 year. When the mailbox is processed again, the folder reverts to the delete - 3 years tag.


Removing or deleting a retention tag from a retention policy


When a retention tag is removed from the retention policy applied to a mailbox, the tag is no longer available to the user and can't be applied to items in the mailbox.


Existing items that have been stamped with that tag continue to be processed by the managed folder assistant based on those settings and any retention action specified in the tag is applied to those messages.


However, if you delete the tag, the tag definition stored in active directory is removed. This causes the managed folder assistant to process all items in a mailbox and restamp the ones that have the removed tag applied. Depending on the number of mailboxes and messages, this process may significantly consume resources on all mailbox servers that contain mailboxes with retention policies that include the removed tag.


If a retention tag is removed from a retention policy, any existing mailbox items with the tag applied will continue to expire based on the tag's settings. To prevent the tag's settings from being applied to any items, you should delete the tag. Deleting a tag removes it from any retention policies where it's included.


Disabling a retention tag


If you disable a retention tag, the managed folder assistant ignores items that have that tag applied. Items that have a retention tag for which retention is disabled are either never moved or never deleted, depending on the specified retention action. Because these items are still considered tagged items, the DPT doesn't apply to them. For example, if you want to troubleshoot retention tag settings, you can temporarily disable a retention tag to stop the managed folder assistant from processing messages with that tag.


The retention period for a disabled retention tag is displayed to the user as never. If a user tags an item believing it will never be deleted, enabling the tag later may result in unintentional deletion of items the user didn't want to delete. The same is true for tags with the move to archive action.


Retention hold


When users are temporarily away from work and don't have access to their email, retention settings can be applied to new messages before they return to work or access their email. Depending on the retention policy, messages may be deleted or moved to the user's personal archive. You can temporarily suspend retention policies from processing a mailbox for a specified period by placing the mailbox on retention hold. When you place a mailbox on retention hold, you can also specify a retention comment that informs the mailbox user (or another user authorized to access the mailbox) about the retention hold, including when the hold is scheduled to begin and end. Retention comments are displayed in supported outlook clients. You can also localize the retention hold comment in the user's preferred language.


Placing a mailbox on retention hold doesn't affect how mailbox storage quotas are processed. Depending on the mailbox usage and applicable mailbox quotas, consider temporarily increasing the mailbox storage quota for users when they're on vacation or don't have access to email for an extended period. During long absences from work, users may accrue a large amount of email. Depending on the volume of email and the length of absence, it may take these users several weeks to sort through their messages. In these cases, consider the additional time it may take the users to catch up on their mail before removing them from retention hold.


If your organization has never implemented MRM, and your users aren't familiar with its features, you can also use retention holds during the initial warm up and training phase of your MRM deployment. You can create and deploy retention policies and educate users about the policies without the risk of having items moved or deleted before users can tag them. A few days before the warm up and training period ends, you should remind users of the warm-up deadline. After the deadline, you can remove the retention hold from user mailboxes, allowing the managed folder assistant to process mailbox items and take the specified retention action.

Tags are one of the most powerful tools in marketing automation software such as activecampaign. They bring key contract relationship management (CRM) benefits to email marketing. To really take advantage and feel the benefits it pays to plan and develop a full tagging strategy.


I, like many, started out using email marketing list based software such as aweber. Over time I realised that I wanted to do more than shift contacts back and forth through countless lists.Luckily around that time a few people I respected began highly recommending activecampaign. I jumped straight in utilising my list based methods and I've been using it since.


Moving from multiple lists to tag based email marketing


Originally I planned to utilise the tags for specific email campaigns across multiple lists. As I started to use tags more, I started to question the necessity of using separate lists at all. I began porting my contacts to a single master list, representing their former list via tags.


When a few specific use cases came up, I realised I still wasn't embracing a truly effective tagging strategy. Along the way I had created a whole host of tags that I was never going to use and that is just the ones I remembered. There were even a few tags that meant nothing to me and I almost couldn't tell you where they came from.


I decided enough was enough and began to creating a tagging strategy for activecampaign. One annoying thing was that there could be three tags including a product name, yet no way to tell what they meant. The tag could have meant they were owners of a product, interested in it, or already in an automation for it. Then there were the cryptic topic tags like ‘tools' which were never going to get used.


I began thinking about times where I may need to target specific audiences. I also consulted a whole host of knowledge on the topic of tagging strategy and started to plan my solution.


It all starts with a plan and a spreadsheet…

Improve your tagging strategy with categories


The first step was categorising my tags, making it easier to identify what they related to. There are a few strategies for this; including codes, special characters and descriptive words. I decided to go with the latter as I was attempting to remove complexity.


So my main tagging categories as of now are:



  • Interests – topics that I email about, so that I can provide the most relevant content. These are applied via key page views, product purchases and clicks within specific emails.

  • Member – these tags track existing members in my site. They also show their membership level and their subscription status (if applicable).

  • Customer – this sort out customers vs general audience. They also drill down into specific products from our catalogue that a contact owns.

  • Prospect – these tags are applied when a user has expressed explicit interest in a specific product. They can help to deliver more targeted email promotions.

  • Lead source – used to identify which website a contact connected from. They also highlight specific bonuses or lead magnets that led to the contacts subscription.

  • Partner – sometimes your audience is also a stakeholder in your business. Your business might have joint ventures, affiliate promotions, co-creators or even investors. These tags let you flag that information in the system so you can stay connected in a meaningful way.

  • Meta tags – this last category allows for the tags that don't quite fit elsewhere. Software solutions often use these to take specific actions. They might be used to track subscription states, initiate automations, and to track engagement.



If you're already using activecampaign, you might be wondering how to add categories to your tags. I certainly haven't seen a feature for that yet but there is a workaround. You can simply prefix the tag you are creating with the appropriate category. So some example tags might be:



  • Interests – marketing automation

  • Member – premium membership

  • Customer – business support

  • Prospect – business support

  • Lead source – themodernentrepreneur.Com

  • Partner – affiliate

  • Meta – recently engaged



As you can see from the above, these tags elegantly express the intended topic and context. You can easily understand key information without having to reference indexes or data tables. In fact after the planning phase, the spreadsheet probably won't be used that often.


With the tag structure appropriately planned, you are already half way there. But there is still one key obstacle remains in achieving true clarity of your tags…


Tracking & managing your activecampaign tagging setup


If you run more than a few automations or integrate activecampaign with other software, you can lose track of how a tag is added or used. You might even forget which automated campaigns they trigger and end send the wrong thing at the wrong time.


To tackle this there I added three more columns to the spreadsheet:



  1. Triggers – used to note where the tag comes from and how it is applied. For example tags might come from; an activecampaign automation, zapier, or even a plugin such as activewoo.

  2. Linked automations – to keep track of which automations use the tag. These automations might; apply the tag, start email campaigns or apply list management strategies.

  3. Notes – A final general column to keep track of any extra information that is relevant to the tag.



Once you have this structure in place you are now ready to start planning your own tagging strategy. Whilst going through this process I cut the number of tags I use in half through merges and deletions. Plus I renamed the majority of tags so they are far easier to find and understand.

Electronic tags


Electronic monitoring (known as ‘tagging’) is used in england and wales to monitor curfews and conditions of a court or prison order.


If you’re given a tag, it will usually be attached to your ankle. A monitoring unit will also be installed in a place stated in your court or prison order (usually your home).


If you breach your conditions you could be taken to court. The court can change your conditions, which could mean you are taken back into custody.


Types of tag


There are 2 types of electronic tag:



  • Curfew tags

  • Location tags



Which tag you get is decided by the court, prison governor or parole board.


If you have a curfew tag


A curfew tag checks if you’re where you’re meant to be during your curfew hours, for example your home. It will send an alert to a monitoring centre if you’re not.


If you have a location tag


A location tag records data about your movements at all times. It checks if you’re:



  • Going to any areas you’ve been told not to go to by the court or prison

  • Going to appointments or other programmes that are part of your conditions

  • Sticking to your curfew



Your responsible officer can use this information to support your good behaviour, or raise any concerns about where you’ve been going.


Your responsible officer will either be a police officer or your probation officer.


You must charge your location tag for at least 1 hour every day.


If your tag runs out of battery this is a potential breach and you could be taken to court or into custody.

Hreflang tag


What are hreflang tag attributes?


The hreflang attribute (also referred to as rel="alternate" hreflang="x" ) tells google which language you are using on a specific page, so the search engine can serve that result to users searching in that language.

What is rel="alternate" hreflang="x"?


Introduced by google in december 2011, the hreflang attribute allows you to show search engines what the relationship is between web pages in alternate languages. It's useful when you've created content that's specific to a local audience. The hreflang attribute adds a signal to search engines that a user querying in language "x" will want this result instead of a page with similar content in language "y".


For example, if you create a spanish-language version of your english-language homepage, you would tag it as "español" by using hreflang="es" so that searchers with an IP address that a search engine has reason to believe is in a spanish-speaking country are served that page in spanish instead of the english version. This can decrease your bounce rate and increase your conversions by making sure your target audience lands on the version of your page most appropriate for them.


Hreflang can also be used to show that you have content targeted toward variants of a single language. If that's the case, you can target your pages even more specifically by extending the hreflang attribute with annotations that indicate which region the content is localized for, e.G. Spain hreflang="es-es" versus mexico hreflang="es-mx" . This is particularly useful to geotarget users to control for variations in currency, shipping, seasonality, and culture.


Hreflang is a signal, not a directive. That means that other SEO factors may override the hreflang attribute and cause a different version of your page to rank higher. To give search engines the clearest possible signals about which pages are for users in which language, make sure you're using other international SEO best practices.


Note that while google and yandex currently use the hreflang attribute, bing uses language meta tags instead.

To get the most benefit out of the hreflang attribute, the following tips are important:


Where the hreflang attribute goes


The hreflang attribute can be placed in the on-page markup, the HTTP header, or the sitemap. Only use one of those locations. If you choose the sitemap, this tool can help you.


What the hreflang attribute looks like


The hreflang attribute on each page should include a reference to itself as well as to all the pages that serve as alternates for it. If your spanish website sells iberian ham to customers in spain, france, and portugal only, the hreflang attributes for your homepage might look like this:


The same annotations should appear on your french and portuguese homepages.


It is still possible that mexican, french canadian, and brazilian customers could see your site (remember, hreflang is a signal not a directive), but if you localize other aspects of your content and site (start by indicating what currency you use and showcasing a local address and phone number), you're less likely to have to deal with pesky american import/export restrictions on your meat products :).

Google supports the ISO 639-1 format for language codes, and you can get more specific by using the ISO 3166-1 alpha 2 format to signal which region you're targeting. Not all of the codes are intuitive (for example, the code for the UK is "gb" not "uk"), so double check before pasting the wrong code all over your site. This hreflang tag generator can help.

You can use multiple hreflangs on one page if you want to show that the page is for users in more than one country or area. For example, if the page targets people who speak amharic in both ethiopia and eritrea, you can indicate that like this:


Don't forget to include a general hreflang attribute without the region code to catch amharic speaking searchers in djibouti or other areas of the world that you want traffic from:


General targeting with x-default


If your page serves up content in a variety of languages or just asks a user to select a preferred page, you can use x-default to show that the page is not specifically targeted. That looks like this:


Hreflang's effect on rankings


Hreflang attributes may not help you increase traffic; instead, the goal of using them is to serve the right content to the right users. They help search engines swap the correct version of the page into the SERP based on a user's location and language preferences. The difference between hreflang and canonicalization


Canonicalization is a tool for showing search engines which version of a URL (each with the same content) is the dominant one to avoid duplicate content issues. Hreflang, on the other hand, is a tool to show which of the different (but often similar) pages (based on language or region) should show up in a search.


Google recommends not using rel="canonical" across country or language versions of your site. But you can use it within a country or language version
